DAMAGED BUT NOT DISCARDED

Finding God's Strength When You Are Worn Out (2 Corinthians 4)

SERMON CONTENT
---------------

1. 1. THE TREASURE IN ORDINARY JARS (2 CORINTHIANS 4:7)

• The treasure is the gospel: "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (v. 6).
• Clay jars were cheap, common, and easy to replace, yet they often protected priceless things.
• God chose clay on purpose, so the power would clearly be his and not ours. Our weakness is part of the design.

2. 2. PRESSED, PERPLEXED, STRUCK DOWN, NEVER DESTROYED (2 CORINTHIANS 4:8-9)

• Paul names the pressure honestly, then names its limit. Each of the four pairs turns on "but."
• Afflicted, but not crushed. Perplexed, but not driven to despair. Persecuted, but not forsaken. Struck down, but not destroyed.
• Weariness is not proof of failing faith. It is what clay jars experience in a hard world.
• The jar holds because the power is God's, and his strength is present in the weakness itself.

3. 3. WASTING AWAY OUTWARDLY, RENEWED INWARDLY (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16-18)

• "So we do not lose heart." Paul does not deny the weariness, but he has a reason not to give up.
• The outer self is wasting away, but the inner self is being renewed "day by day," like daily bread. God does the renewing, and we receive it.
• Our troubles are "light" and "momentary" next to an "eternal weight of glory." Paul is not saying the pain is small. He is giving us a larger frame.

4. THIS WEEK: THREE SIMPLE STEPS

• Name your cracks honestly to God instead of hiding them.
• When you catch yourself pushing on your own strength, stop and ask God to be the power you need.
• Each day, fix your gaze on what is unseen and lasting.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
-------------
Main points to remember and apply

1. You are a clay jar, and that is no accident and no shame. God chose to put his treasure in ordinary, breakable people.
2. You may be pressed, perplexed, and struck down, but you are not destroyed, because the strength that holds you is God's, not yours.
3. While the outer jar wears down, the inner life is renewed day by day.
